An old mine cushion is not simply a modern cushion with larger facets. It belongs to a different visual language, shaped by hand, older lighting conditions and the character of the original rough.
What creates the old mine appearance
Broad pavilion facets, a small or open culet, a high crown and a softly squared or irregular outline often contribute to the slow, deliberate flashes collectors value. No single measurement proves that a stone is beautiful. The elements must work together when the diamond moves.
Outline and facet rhythm
Some old mine cushions are nearly square; others are elongated. Slight asymmetry can be part of their charm, but disorder is not automatically desirable. A fine example has a coherent outline and an internal pattern that feels balanced face-up.
How we assess one
We review the report, compare stated measurements with face-up spread, examine the stone in varied light and study both on-hand and 360 degree video. We then consider whether the colour, clarity and proportions support the individual personality of the stone.
