An elongated old mine cushion gives a ring or pendant a clear direction. Its length, shoulder shape and central facet pattern determine how that line reads on the body.

Use the dimensions to picture the shape

The 5.03 ct F VS1 cushion measures 11.72 × 8.91 mm, a ratio of 1.32. The 5.16 ct G SI2 cushion measures 12.35 × 9.21 mm, a ratio of 1.34. Their ratios are close; the second stone is larger in both face-up dimensions.

Compare the corners and where each outline carries its width. A fuller shoulder can make a stone feel softer, while straighter sides give it a more rectangular appearance.

Watch along the length

Track the broad reflections from end to end during a slow rotation. Check any dark central band from several distances and angles. Then turn the stone across the finger to see which orientation you prefer.

Give the setter a condition map and accurate side views so vulnerable girdle areas and culet clearance can be protected. The face-up size guide offers further dimension comparisons.
