A pair of antique diamonds should look balanced together in size, outline, colour and movement. Begin with the face-up dimensions, then view both stones beside each other under the same light.
A documented pair
Our 1.53 and 1.52 ct old mine pair measures 6.67 × 6.48 mm and 6.60 × 6.52 mm. Both are D colour, with VS1 and SI1 clarity respectively. Those closely matched dimensions give you a useful starting point for comparing apparent size.
View them as earrings
Place the stones in matching holders, at the same angle and distance. Look first at the outlines, then at the colour and the size of the broad reflections. Rotate both together and check whether one consistently appears darker or more active. Repeat near the face, where earrings will be seen.
Read both reports and examine the clarity features individually. The setter also needs the two side profiles, girdle maps and culet clearances to plan matching finished heights.
